The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Historical Preservation Project
The Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Historic Preservation Office, WOJB Radio, the LCO Ojibwe Community College Cultural Resource Center, and the LCO Ojibwe Community College Native American Studies Department are collaborating on an oral history project entitled: "Nibabaa-asiginaamin dibaajimowinan: Gathering Stories from Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Elders and Community Members," which is funded by the National Park Service Historic Preservation Fund. The project will create a series of audio recordings featuring memoirs (oral histories) of elders and community members.
Project staff members are currently contacting possible participants for interviews to begin in October. Participants will be asked to share biographical information and knowledge about seasonal cultural activities. As a result, WOJB Radio will produce and broadcast 30 half hour radio programs and four oral history roundtables throughout the project until the Summer of 2007. Selected recordings will be used in curriculum development, research, and community displays and exhibits. All original recordings will be preserved in a climate controlled archives room at the LCO College Cultural Resource Center for future generations.
If you are a Lac Courte Oreilles tribal member or community member who is interested in being interviewed, or if you know of someone who may be interested in providing an interview, please call WOJB's Jeff St. Germaine at 715-634-2100 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. MISSION STATEMENT Nibabaa-asignaamin dibaajimowinan: the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Oral History Project serves to document, preserve and protect important cultural sites on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation and to enhance the cultural identity and empower all Lac Courte Oreilles tribal people to further their knowledge about community history, language, traditional lifeways, value systems, and the importance of passing on oral tradition to future generations.
